“I see myself as a communicator of emotion,” says Montell Fish between spoonfuls of chicken noodle soup. The 25 year-old Pittsburgh native is cozied up in a black ARMY emblazoned hoodie he got somewhere in Europe, baggy Yeezy sweats, and black Bottega puddle boots while enjoying a meal at SoHo staple Fanelli’s in his adopted city of New York. His chunky headphones are wrapped tightly around his ears, and even though it’s the first time Fish and I are chatting the sight feels incredibly uncanny, as I’ve been watching countless hours of videos of a similar scene online. Whether he’s playing demos on his YouTube channel or performing live in New York, Paris, or Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show, there is a semblance of voyeuristic intimacy, like you shouldn’t be in this person’s room watching him pour his heart out. It’s crisp on the East Coast and the sun is going down quickly and early, the perfect kind of day for the emotions Fish’s music communicates - melancholy, yearning, and heartbreak, with a visceral and relatable anguish that has garnered him a devoted following.
